"Wikis for collaborative learning, knowledge construction, critical thinking, and contextual application."
Eight-week lesson plan:
(1) Title of the lesson/training;
Using Wiki to Learn
English language
(2) Target audience;
Undergraduate Saudi
Students
(3) Learning/Training objectives;
There are
there learning objectives:
1.
By the end of this course, the student will
write ten English sentences without grammar issues.
2.
By the end of this course, the student will
list 80 English vocabulary words.
3.
By the end of this course, the student will make
a two minute recording of themselves in English.
(4) Rationale for the use of wiki;
The rational
for using the wiki is to provide a space for students to learn from each other. In
addition, it is a great tool that allows users to gain a meaningful experience
by engaging in activities and discussions. According to West and West (2009)
“the role of the instructor is not to provide learning. the role of the instructor
is to provide the context in which learning can occur”(p.22). Moreover, the ease of use is a great feature for wikis. Users can
work together in a wiki with less technical skills. It is a useful way to save time
and energy to focus on learning instead of facing technical troubles with
complicated tools (King & Cox, 2011). As a teacher I want students to
learn important concepts such as, sharing information, be open to new
ideas and master online collaborative skills.
(5) Details on how wiki is used;
There
are eight learning topics related to learning English. The student is required
to read learning materials and come up with one paragraph. It should be around
150 words that reflect the students’ understanding of reading resources. Also, the
student needs to show a high level of thinking and be able to connect their
learning materials with his/her personal experience of learning English.
Moreover, a student should add one audio or video file related to the learning
topic for each week. For example, audio or video about learning basic English
grammar.
(6) Suggested wiki-related learning activities/practices/schedules;
Learning
activities:
· Each student
required to post one paragraph150 word about the reading materials.
·
A student required to post one comment.
·
Adding appropriate audio or video to the wiki to promote
learning English.
·
Group of three to four students, they have to
create questions about the reading materials and share their questions in the
wiki.
(7) Wiki Activity Evaluation (rubric, grading criteria, etc.);

Hi,
ReplyDeleteI have difficulty learning new languages. Your integration of a Wiki into learning English is an interesting idea. You incorporated not only learning to research but also learning to structure (written language and the Wiki product). The concept of communication flow is really key to any language and learning how to structure it through a Wiki is a novel and inspiring on many levels. I like how you even incorporated videos of the students, themselves, into the project. You have really utilized Boom' s Revised Taxonomy (Krathwohl, 2002) cognitive process by starting with remembering and understanding to applying and working through to creating different practical usages. This goes along with Wiki construction but also gives the student an additional chance to practice their English skill. This course looks like it could be utilized by face-to-face and by distance learning.
I wish I had tools like this when I was trying to learn Spanish.

Hi Vee,
DeleteI am glad you liked my lesson plan. Thank you for your feedback and I appreciate your thoughts.

Hi Tariq,
ReplyDeleteGreat lesson plan. I'm new to this and struggled which resulted in a lesson plan that was very wordy. I liked the conciseness of your plan which doesn't overburden the student and possibly confuse them with what is truly required for successful completion. Your lesson plan definitely touches upon a paramount challenge of the teaching method embedded in the lesson which in turn links directly to the learning outcomes (Hoskova-Mayerova, S. and Rosicka, Z, 2014).

DeleteTariq, what a supportive way to integrate English speakers. It is collaborative, so they can feel confidence in their community. It is technology based, which is a universal tool that feels familiar to many.
ReplyDeleteHi Melissa,
